Sometimes all you need is to get away from the hustle & bustle of the city. Nothing beats a peaceful walk by the water at the weekend!
We might not be blessed with a beach in Greater Manchester but we have plenty of beautiful lakes and reservoirs on our doorstep.
These are all within easy reach and surrounded by stunning countryside and parkland where you can take a stroll or spread out a picnic blanket.
Take a look at our top picks…
1. Hollingworth Lake
High in the hills near Littleborough, this man-made lake was originally built as the main water source for the Rochdale Canal during the 19th century.
Today it’s a popular attraction with walkers and families enjoying days out, with a seaside atmosphere created by an amusement arcade, fish and chip shops and ice cream kiosks along its shores.
2. Tatton Mere
Surrounded by 1,000 acres of parkland, this beautiful lake is part of the sprawling Tatton Park estate in Knutsford. There’s plenty of space on its grassy banks to spread out a picnic blanket, and mature trees providing shade.
3. Sale Water Park
The picturesque lake at the heart of this pretty park is the perfect place to while away a summer’s day. Visitors can enjoy a picnic at the water’s edge, have a go at water sports including dinghy sailing, canoeing and windsurfing, and explore the surrounding woodland and wildflower meadows.
